September markets! Starting to feel like fall finally!

A hive inspection in hyperlapse. We're at our late summer setup, so no demaree. First I unstack the hive to get to the two brood boxes on the bottom and look to make sure there are eggs which means we have a laying queen. Then it's pulling frames of honey and replace those with empty frames, then stack it all back together, strap it down, shake off the bees, and buzz on back home!

The post-summer-solstice hive shortening is underway. As the days get shorter, so do the hives. The nectar flow slows and the bees need less space, so the hives start shedding boxes which means bringing home empty boxes to store till the spring. Empty space invites pests and problems, so I give them only the space they need. There's still honey coming in, and we've had loads of rain this August which means a better late summer flow than we've had in a couple years now.

Scenes from beekeeping at @felicity_farm_1867 today. I don't stop to take photos often since I'm usually too focused on getting work done, but the bees were in a pleasant mood today and I wasn't in a rush. Really nice to slow down and enjoy the process for a moment today! Also stopped to say hello to the chickens and goats - I really have some of the best apiary locations around 💛

The buzzziest bar in town this evening.
I always love it when they line up around the honey that spills out of burr comb between boxes and get right to clean up duty.

I get questions about how the bees cope during the

I get questions about how the bees cope during the heat but also about how your beekeeper deals with the heat. The bees do a really great job at regulating the temperature inside the hive - they've been doing this for thousands of years across all kinds of climates. Humans though - we get acclimated and have trouble adjusting to extremes! During extreme heat, I'll push the timing of inspections and pulling honey to stay safe (no need to be lifting bee boxes when the "feels like" is 120°F), or if work needs to be done, I'll work slower, take more frequent breaks, work when the hives are in the shade, and drink LOTS and lots of water. The suit is ventilated mesh so at least it catches the breeze and doesn't absorb water, but it's still hot in there, so sometimes when the water bottle spills down the suit, it's a good thing!

Filmed during one of our first heat waves this year. I've been really bad at social media this season (good thing - I've been busy hauling in honey non-stop!), so things get posted when we have rainy days which haven't been often!
